Free Coffee Maker Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: Should Marijuana be made Legal on just the Economics?

I know many are going say nothing but bad things about Marijuana, and I personally feel that Marijuana is on track with alcohol, so it's not healthy and if made legal would cause issues with people, but going forward after reviewing the CNBC Documentary "Marijuana Inc." http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=11… it only seems like a no brainer that keeping Marijuana off the market is promoting our current market woes. After all, in California's Emerald Triangle virtually everyone there grows it, with nearly every other home growing it for "Medicinal Purposes" that they now have Hash Coffee Bars in Oakland where you can sample the four different varieties in public, and buy all kinds of other products legally while your kids have a smoothie while they wait. Then to consider all the billions of dollars that go untaxed and then all the tax money just under a billion dollars on enforcement that can't keep, as the DEA Helicopter pilot in the documentary said, back in the old days (not even a decade ago) they would spend a day finding three or four grows. Now they can find a a grow site in California within minutes, and they don't waste their time with small operations, only focusing on larger illegal sites and national parks. When a country is spending tons of resources on battle not being won, and billions, maybe even in the hundreds of billions is virtually going untaxed, even making a case about the dangers of Marijuana, we as America should get back to our capitalist roots, and if a free market fixes stuff, we should let this market be free to save not only our tax money, but our economy. At least on the argument that if we can have alcohol, perhaps we should not limit another big money maker. They all ready have magazines and a University course in Cali on how to grow this stuff, how to manage your business and such. What do you think? more

Resolved Question: On fairy stories by tolken?! please help ! i dont understand this passage on recovery?

Recovery (which includes return and renewal of health) is a re-gaining—regaining of a clear view. I do not say “seeing things as they are” and involve myself with the philosophers, though I might venture to say “seeing things as we are (or were) meant to see them”—as things apart from ourselves. We need, in any case, to clean our windows; so that the things seen clearly may be freed from the drab blur of triteness or familiarity—from possessiveness. Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention, perceiving their likeness and unlikeness: that they are faces, and yet unique faces. This triteness is really the penalty of “appropriation”: the things that are trite, or (in a bad sense) familiar, are the things that we have appropriated, legally or mentally. We say we know them. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Of course, fairy-stories are not the only means of recovery, or prophylactic against loss. Humility is enough. And there is (especially for the humble) Mooreeffoc, or Chestertonian Fantasy. Mooreeffoc is a fantastic word, but it could be seen written up in every town in this land. It is Coffee-room, viewed from the inside through a glass door, as it was seen by Dickens on a dark London day; and it was used by Chesterton to denote the queerness of things that have become trite, when they are seen suddenly from a new angle. That kind of “fantasy” most people would allow to be wholesome enough; and it can never lack for material. But it has, I think, only a limited power; for the reason that recovery of freshness of vision is its only virtue. The word Mooreeffoc may cause you suddenly to realize that England is an utterly alien land, lost either in some remote past age glimpsed by history, or in some strange dim future to be reached only by a time-machine; to see the amazing oddity and interest of its inhabitants and their customs and feeding-habits; but it cannot do more than that: act as a time-telescope focused on one spot. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else (make something new), may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you. The “fantastic” elements in verse and prose of other kinds, even when only decorative or occasional, help in this release. But not so thoroughly as a fairy-story, a thing built on or about Fantasy, of which Fantasy is the core. Fantasy is made out of the Primary World, but a good craftsman loves his material, and has a knowledge and feeling for clay, stone and wood which only the art of making can give. By the forging of Gram cold iron was revealed; by Readings On Fairy Stories 20 the making of Pegasus horses were ennobled; in the Trees of the Sun and Moon root and stock, flower and fruit are manifested in glory. And actually fairy-stories deal largely, or (the better ones) mainly, with simple or fundamental things, untouched by Fantasy, but these simplicities are made all the more luminous by their setting. For the story-maker who allows himself to be “free with” Nature can be her lover not her slave. It was in fairy-stories that I first divined the potency of the words, and the wonder of the things, such as stone, and wood, and iron; tree and grass; house and fire; bread and wine. more

Resolved Question: how might I make this? (answering this question will require knoledge to hydraulics)?

I have some drawer slides and I made them into things to attatch to my forarm because I wanted to make the thing the extends into something that goes out and back in really quick with enough force to break something faster than the human eye can easily see. I am want to try and use hydrolics to accomplish the task of extending it, and springs to pull it back in. how might I do this? I want to try and use stuff that I might have around my house. also, I have alot of old stuff in my basement including CD drives, old computer, old microwaves, old coffee makers, old humidifiers, and other similar small appliences. I have access to a wide range of small and large household appliences for free and as for obscure parts, I can get hose at surplus places probably. so how can I make this for under 50 dollars? if that is not possible then just tell me how anyway and list the estimated price. I would like it be be powerful enough to break a cinder block, but anything will do really and any serious answer is appreciated. sorry for asking such a long question. more

Resolved Question: did you know these cleaning hints? are they good ones?

Household Hints Floors No-wax floors: To wash no-wax floors, add ½ cup of white distilled vinegar to a half-gallon of warm water. Carpet stain removal: A mixture of 1 teaspoon of liquid detergent and 1 teaspoon of white distilled vinegar in a pint of lukewarm water will remove non-oily stains from carpets. Apply it to the stain with a soft brush or towel and rub gently. Rinse with a towel moistened with clean water and blot dry. Repeat this procedure until the stain is gone. Then dry quickly, using a fan or hair dryer. This should be done as soon as the stain is discovered. Windows & Walls Streakless windows: Simply wash with a mixture of equal parts of white distilled vinegar and warm water. Dry with a soft cloth. This solution will make your windows gleam and will not leave the usual film or streaks on the glass. Washing woodwork: You can ease the job of washing painted walls, woodwork and Venetian blinds by using a mixture of 1 cup ammonia, ½ cup white distilled or cider vinegar and ¼ cup baking soda with 1 gallon of warm water. Wipe this solution over walls or blinds with a sponge or cloth and rinse with clear water. Dirt and grime comes off easily and the solution will not dull the painted finish or leave streaks. Water or alcohol marks on wood: Stubborn rings resulting from wet glasses being placed on wood furniture may be removed by rubbing with a mixture of equal parts of white distilled vinegar and olive oil. Rub with the grain and polish for the best results. Kitchen Garbage disposal cleaner: Garbage disposals may be kept clean and odor free with vinegar cubes. Vinegar cubes are made by filling an ice tray with a mixture of 1 cup of vinegar and enough water to fill the ice tray and then freezing it. Run the mixture through the disposal, and then flush it with cold water for a minute or so. Coffee maker cleaner (automatic): White distilled vinegar can help to dissolve mineral deposits that collect in automatic drip coffee makers from hard water. Fill the reservoir with white distilled vinegar and run it through a brewing cycle. Rinse thoroughly with water when the cycle is finished. (Be sure to check the owner’s manual for specific instructions.) Clean the microwave: Boil a solution of 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar and 1 cup of water in the microwave. Will loosen splattered on food and deodorize. Deodorize the kitchen drain: Pour a cup of white distilled vinegar down the drain once a week. Let stand 30 minutes and then flush with cold water. Clean the refrigerator: Wash with a solution of equal parts water and white distilled vinegar. Clean and disinfect wood cutting boards: Wipe with full strength white distilled vinegar. Brass polish: Brass, copper and pewter will shine if cleaned with the following mixture. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of white distilled vinegar and stir in flour until it becomes a paste. Apply paste to the metals and let it stand for about 15 minutes. Rinse with clean warm water and polish until dry. Ant deterrent: Ant invasions can sometimes be deterred by washing counter tops, cabinets and floors with white distilled vinegar. Getting Rid of Fruit Flies/Gnats in Your Kitchen Place a bowl filled with ½ quart water, 2 Tbsp. sugar, 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar and a couple of drops of dish soap to attract the fruit flies. Always eliminate the source of attraction, i.e., ripened produce. Cleaning Stainless Steel Appliances Apply vinegar with a soft cloth to remove streaks from stainless steel appliances. Try in an inconspicuous place first. Cleaner Dishes and Glasses Pour 1 ½ cup to 2 cups white distilled vinegar in the bottom of dishwasher, along with regular dishwasher soap. Wash full cycle. Remove Refrigerator Smells Place 1 cup apple cider vinegar in a glass and set in refrigerator. Within 2 days, any smell is gone! Bathroom Bathtub film: Bathtub film can be removed by wiping with white distilled vinegar and then with soda. Rinse clean with water. Shower doors: Rub down shower doors with a sponge soaked in white distilled vinegar to remove soap residue. Toilet bowl cleaner: Stubborn stains can be removed from the toilet by spraying them with white distilled vinegar and brushing vigorously. The bowl may be deodorized by adding 3 cups of white distilled vinegar. Allow it to remain for a half hour, then flush. Unclog the showerhead: Corrosion may be removed from showerheads or faucets by soaking them in white distilled vinegar overnight. This may be easily accomplished by saturating a terry cloth towel in vinegar and wrapping it around the showerhead or faucet. Lawn/Garden Kill grass: To kill grass on sidewalks and driveways, pour full strength white distilled vinegar on it. Kill weeds: Spray white distilled vinegar full strength on tops of weeds. Reapply on any new growth until plants have starved. Increase soil acidity: In hard water areas, add a cup of vinegar to a gallon of tap wasome one sent to my e mail so i copied & pasted & posted here im going to try a few or more myself how about others? i also printed it out as i forget easy lol thanks for taking time to read all of this more

Voting Question: Starbucks or Gamestop? which is a better Job?

Ok so when it comes down to it I want to work at Gamestop more so because I have been gaming since I could figure out an Atari joystick. I know a lot about games and I know about even the hidden gems and have a few in my collection. The downside is I hear the pay sucks (but really I just need some side money im in college but I need the extra cash just in case it doesn't go so hot) As for starbucks I hear its a bit better when it comes to money and in some cases its easier on the worker (that's what ive heard) and while im not much of a coffee maker Im pretty sure I could learn how to do it and for both jobs im not much of a complainer so I could deal with some BS. So whats the better Job? Gamestop? Starbucks? This will be my 2nd job, and my last job was working in my grandfathers plumbing company. Im 18 i have my high school diploma and I have one semester of college and a clean slate when it comes to the law and im drug free. Hours shouldn't be a problem I don't think... if i missed anything that could help let me know! more

Resolved Question: C.L.R...Does anyone run it straight through their coffee makers?

I couldn't find anywhere that said you can't. I removed the perculator tubing and cleaned as much of the massive build up of hard water cake as I could. But I couldn't really get to the middle section of the u-tube. So I tried running straight CLR through it (meaning running machine through a brew cycle). It seemed to free up alot more of the junk. I rinsed 3 times with water. Coffee maker is like new again, it's a Toastess single cup Walmart special (great machine, had it for 6 years). more

Resolved Question: what is the best brand of coffee you've tried?

Resolved Question: What is the best Ground Coffee to buy in a bag from a Supermarket? I like Hazelnut Flavored Coffee, Plz help?

Ok I have a big problem. For the past 2 years I have been drinking the Dunkin Donuts Hazelnut Flavored coffee in a bag. You know the one they sell in Supermarkets, the ground coffee in a bag. It was tasting ok for quite a while. You see I add to it the Land O' Lakes fat Free Half and Half and I also add to it a shot of International Delight Hazelnut creamer. Everything was fine till the past 2 months or so when the coffee started tasting not as good. In fact it began to taste bad, plus they changed the Hazelnut International Delight Creamer on me and the new one is not as sweet as the old one and I did complain to that company but they are saying they didn't change the ingredients. I don't know what's going on. I am not getting the same tasting Hazelnut coffee that I used to enjoy and love. I know in the past it tasted wonderful and all but was I doing it incorrectly because the Dunkin Donuts Coffee was already hazelnut flavored but I still was adding the International delight hazelnut creamer to it plus the half and half of Land o' Lakes. I don't like dark coffee. I like light to medium coffee and I am from originally from the East Coast where they had a Dunkin Donut store literally on every street corner but now I live in Arizona and the Dunkin Donuts out here all taste terrible. It must be the water they use I guess. Anyway I am looking to find a great tasting ground coffee that I can buy from the store that is medium preferrably that has hazelnut taste to it but I am gonna need help with what creamers to put in the coffee as well. I use the coffee maker to do the coffee in the morning. You know I even bought the Dunkin Donuts original ground coffee from the store and it didn't taste good at all. I hate starbucks coffee because I find it too too strong. Please help. I need real experts in this field. I need great tasting coffee immediately. more

Resolved Question: What did you do for yourself after your divorce?

A lot of people struggle with their image or self esteem after a divorce. Some feel independent and liberated once they are free of an unhappy marriage. I've heard of boob jobs, lypo, face lifts, serious fitness kicks etc. Career changes, going back to school, that vacation you always wanted, midlife crisis car, new house... What did you do for yourself after your divorce? Or what would you do? My divorce present to myself was a very expensive, kick-azz cappacino maker and braces. Eventually I bought a new house and car. None of it really matters...except the coffee maker :)Zinger2: thanks for the confidence. No, I scored pretty much nothing. And I pretty much left everything behind. I MADE enough money to qualify for a mortgage and a new car loan (and we're talking a modest house and a Camry, not a mansion and a Mercedes). In fact, once I stopped dumping all my hard-earned cash straight into my ex's bank account I was amazed what I could afford on my own. more

Voting Question: HELP! 9 month old twins living with mom NOT working out (continued)?

So, here we are. The best job I could find here was a part-time music teaching job at a Catholic school w/ no insurance. In addition to, I sub in the afternoons, teach voice lessons, sing weddings, teach dance lessons and sell dancewear online. 4 jobs that don't amount to a hill of beans. They're on Medicaid for 3 more months, go to subsidized day care with all the drug dealers kids, and I finally broke down and went to WIC when they started consuming a can of formula a day in addition to my breastfeeding. My mom begs us not to leave, and I am eternally grateful that she wants us here. She is still very depressed. Most of the time, she is unbearable to live with as she manifests it with anger rather than sadness. Days go by and she cannot say a nice, positive thing about anything or anyone. She interrupts people and always goes on about how horrible her life is. It is starting to drain me. I can't leave as much as the formula can on the counter, while her stuff is everywhere. This a.m., she put the coffee maker away b4 I even got a chance to use it saying that she couldn't keep her house clean. I got a Roomba to free up some time, but all she does is complain that it doesn't do good enough and now feels compelled to vacuum everyday.I still vacuum w/ the regular one at least 2 times a week It is simply a battle of wills. I don't really live here for free, as I teach dance for her for free in exchange for living here. I pay the water and cable. She is very good not to give unsolicited advice about child-rearing, but I ask alot b/c she has a lot to offer. But it's the other stupid little things that she constantly has to pick on me about and always has. (Clothes, weight, etc. I think that's why I fell for their father b/c he accepted me for who I was) I feel more like their loser big sister than their mother and it's really starting to get to me to the point of totally withdrawing from anyone but them. I guess my question is: should I find a job elsewhere and move? Vegas is too far now that I've come to my senses and due to the economy, they had to cut way back at my previous job, so I'm sure that offer doesn't still stand) There are plenty of good-paying teaching jobs in bigger cities about 3 hours away. I'd take them to a nice day care, do my 1! job, pick them up and come home. Just seeing that in writing looks so nice. Or I can stay here and wait for something full-time to open up, never be able to afford to live on our own in the meantime, continue to get help from the government, just for the sake of not leaving her or uprooting them. My dad won't even co-sign for me on a bigger car as my stroller doesn't fit in mine, but yet was so thankful that we were here for his birthday the other night. We were the only one's present. He feels like I need to learn how to live on my own. He's gotten me 3 presents that I can think of in my entire life while he goes and blows money on condos in foreign countries and other cities. My mom completely supported us and he'd give her food money when he felt like it. I totally understand that he wants me to succeed, BUT I WAS DOING GREAT UNTIL I CAME BACK HERE!!! He is 70 and it won't be long that he'd going to need someone to take care of him. My other brother won't come near here, so it'll be me. I just don't know about being a single mother of 9 month olds somewhere where I have no one. I know this jarbled mess, but I just had to get it out. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Don't you hate giving a perfect gift and getting a crappy one in return?

I know its the thought that counts and blah blah blah...But it annoys me that when you put a lot of time and effort in choosing and buying a gift and you recieve something completely thoughtless from the other person...For example today I gave my friend a Graduation Present which was a singing card and a $80 Expresso/Cap/Frap maker and since she loves coffee and I knew she would love something like this for next year when she gets an apartment for college. She gets me a $10 gift card to starbucks and I'm not a big fan of coffee but what bugs me the most is she put no thought into it..Sorry for ranting just had to get my anger out somewhere..Share your experiences and feel free to comment:) more

Resolved Question: A poorly written court order caused my rights to be violated?

Ok, heres the story. A few years ago my grandfather signed his property to my dad, the house, the property, everything. And we didn't even want it, this isn't going on because we want all of his junk, which is piled up all around the house and in 2 garages, just JUNK. Anyway, we moved in with my grandparents a year ago because my grandfather wasn't taking care of my grandmother correctly. To give you an idea of what he's like, my grandmother was in the middle of a heart attack once, and we came over to him standing there with a bucket yelling at her for throwing up... My grandfather was a complete ***hole, treating us like prisoners, putting us through mental abuse, getting my mother to the point of shaking when he was around her... Well he and my mom were fighting because he got really mean with my sister one day, and he hit my mom in the chest, then my dad then took a hold of him and put him in his place. Sorry if that wasn't clear, to sum up, My grandfather got violent so my dad(his son) took a hold of him and set him down. Ok a month later my mom is helping my grandmother to the bathroom, and my grandmother was holding back fluid and she had heart trouble and was VERY prone to falling down. Her and my mom fell up against the wall, my grandfather comes over to their room and starts yelling at my mom, and tells her "he doesn't need any ****ing trouble"... Well the next morning my dad comes home(he works third shift, and was there when my grandfather flipped out on my mom for my grandmother falling) and he see's my mom hiding in her room and my grandfather walking around around like he didn't do a damn thing... He takes a hold of my grandfather, sets him down and tells him that he never treats my mom like that again. Ok, I agree with that, but now my grandfather walks out, gets a PFA against my dad, and now my grandfather is working on getting his junk away from the property. This past saturday he was to come with a moving company to remove some of his junk. Just because the court order was poorly written, he was able to bring anybody he wanted. Oh and there were three people that were supposed to be refused access to the property because they were trouble makers, their names weren't specified in the court order because it was POORLY WRITTEN. Saturday morning my dad leaves so he isn't within however many feet from my grandfather, me(16) and my 22 year old brother in law Troy are left in charge of the whole deal, the three people that weren't supposed to be here, and about 40 other people march onto the property and troy tells them to leave, they refuse and start yelling at troy that he would have to call the cops if we want them to leave.. We call, the state police say it's a civil matter and they can't do anything... Let the chaos commence! we've got people al over the property yeling in the house, standing around drinking coffee, threatening my family, and all kinds of crap. Finally somebody that we didn't even KNOW, walks into the yard and threatens to beat the hell out of my sister, we called the cops and they came because of the threat, they got everything in order. NObody was yelling and everybody was working... Well now it looks like those three people that weren't supposed to be here are just gonna get away with just marching onto the property because the court order was just POORLY WRITTEN. LO-freaking-L. I just need to know if my dads rights were violated and if we can do something about this. If you have any questions about what I just said, please feel free to ask if it will help get me an answer. I'm desperate here, my dad is starting to go downhill fast because of this, and it's bringing my whole family down. I need help. We feel like we have no rights. Please help me with an answer. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Coffee lovers, these are questions for you!?

I have several questions about coffee for the Yahoo Answers Community could answer. This is a poll and information questions all in one. 1) Is there a right way to drink coffee? Is cream, milk, 1/2 & 1/2, etc bad? 2) If you have a French Press, Espresso Machine, Auto Drip Coffee Maker, or Instant Coffee; which would you use? And Why? 3) If you have a French Press, Auto Drip Coffee Maker, or Instant Coffee; Which do you use for a strong cup of coffee? And How? 4) If you have a big container of pre-grounded coffee or a small bag of whole coffee beans; Which do you use first? What do I do with the other? (All original packaging) What will air-tight containers do to coffee? 5) You have a espresso machine, pre-grounded coffee, and a coffee grinder; is it OK to fine grind the coffee and use it? Will it be better if I use coffee beans? 6) Ignoring cost, Which would you do? Brew your own coffee/espresso or Buy one at a coffee shop? 7) If you want to buy a cup of coffee/specialty drink (Iced or espresso, etc.) Where do you go: Coffee Shop or Fast Food Restaurant. Why? Feel free to answer as many of my questions as you wish. Some other questions or info I forgot to add. 1) Using a French Press, Is it bad to brew for a long time? How long should it take? 2) Is it bad to buy bulk coffee? (300+ cup containers of grounded coffee? If I do have it, what should I do with it? 3) So, If I have bulk coffee (Like from the question above) I can't use it in an espresso machine? (Finely Ground the grounds.) 4) Iced coffee, is it evil? Is there a right way to make it? (I put hot coffee over a cup full of ice.) Should I use espresso or strong coffee for it? 5) If I want to make my own espresso specialty drink (Cappuccino, Latte, etc) How much milk do I use to steam per shot? 6) Steam milk, What kind of milk should I use? Whole, 2%, 1%, Skim, or Half & Half? Can I use other kinds? (Ex: Soy, Rice) more

Resolved Question: Ways to annoy your co-workers joke, isn't this so funny?

1. Page yourself over the intercom. Don't disguise your voice. 2. Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits. Wear them one day after your boss does. This is especially effective if your boss is of a different gender than you. 3. Make up nicknames for all your coworkers and refer to them only by these names. "That's a good point, Sparky." "No, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with you there, Cha-cha." 4. Send e-mail to the rest of the company telling them exactly what you're doing. For example: "If anyone needs me, I'll be in the bathroom." 5. Hi-Lite your shoes. Tell people you haven't lost them as much since you did this. 6. While sitting at your desk, soak your fingers in Palmolive liquid. Call everyone Madge. 7. Every time someone asks you to do something, anything, ask him or her if they want fries with that. 8. Hang mosquito netting around your cubicle. When you emerge to get coffee or a printout or whatever, slap yourself randomly the whole way. 9. Put a chair facing a printer. Sit there all day and tell people you're waiting for your document. 10. Send e-mail back and forth to yourself engaging yourself in an intellectual debate. Forward the mail to a co-worker and ask her to settle the disagreement. 11. Put decaf in the coffee maker for three weeks. Once everyone has withdrawn from caffeine addiction, switch to espresso. 12. Put your trash can on your desk. Label it "IN." 13. Feign an unnatural and hysterical fear of staplers. 14. Send e-mail messages saying there's free pizza or donuts or cake in the lunchroom. When people drift back to work complaining that they found none, lean back, pat your stomach and say, "Oh you've got to be faster than that." 15. Encourage your colleagues to join you in a little synchronized chair-dancing. more

Resolved Question: When I see things like this it makes me sick - President Obama Thong?

Now do you know why we must protect our President? White House Lawyers Look to Limit Commercial Use of President Julianna Goldman – Fri Jan 30, 4:16 pm ET Featured Topics: Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama’s popularity makes him a marketer’s dream. Now, the honeymoon may be over for those trying to profit from his appeal. White House lawyers want to control the use of the president’s image, recognizing the worldwide fascination about Obama’s election, First Amendment free-speech rights and easy access to videos and photos on the Web. “Our lawyers are working on developing a policy that will protect the presidential image while being careful not to squelch the overwhelming enthusiasm that the public has for the president,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. Obama’s calls for change and his “Yes We Can” campaign mantra are being evoked to sell assembly-required furniture in Ikea’s “Embrace Change” marketing campaign, bargain airfares during Southwest Airlines Inc.’s “Yes You Can” sale and “Yes Pecan” ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc. shops. “I can’t remember this ever happening to an active politician before, as a spokesperson or as an image for a brand,” said Brad Adgate, director of research for Horizon Media Inc., a New York-based advertising agency. “He’s in the highest profile of any person in the world right now.” Riding the wave of Obama’s popularity may become a concern when advertisers use his likeness without permission to imply that Obama is endorsing a product or cause. The White House through the years has objected to commercial use of presidential faces, such as footage of President George H.W. Bush in a Cold War-themed 1989 television ad for cold medication. Presidential Speeches The National Education Association is running a TV ad with excerpts from a speech Obama gave on July 5, 2007, with the group’s logo behind him. The educators’ group has previously shown remarks by Obama in Web videos and is confident the president shares a “clear and longstanding” commitment to “real change and real reform in education,” said Steve Snider, NEA’s manager of advertising and broadcast services. The Web site for McKinstry Co., a Seattle-based mechanical contractor that Obama visited during last year’s presidential campaign, features a YouTube clip of Obama praising its work improving energy efficiency at schools and office buildings. “As president I’ll use companies like McKinstry as a model for the nation,” Obama says. McKinstry spokeswoman Genevieve Guinn said the company bought rights to the video and hasn’t gotten any White House complaints. Obama’s face is on a full-page newspaper advertisement by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, a lobbying group in Alexandria, Virginia. Burning Coal “We figured out how to put a man on the moon in 10 years,” the ad quotes Obama as saying last August. “You can’t tell me we can’t figure out how to burn coal that we mine right here in the United States of America and make it work.” The group also began running a TV ad in December that shows footage of Obama promoting clean-coal energy during a campaign event last September. The clean coal lobby group told Obama representatives about the ads before the inauguration and received no signals from them that there was any discomfort, As a record-setting crowd jammed Washington earlier this month for Obama’s inauguration, Obama’s face was featured on thousands of t-shirts, coffee mugs and calendars for sale at stores and street vendors across the capital. Obama’s official inaugural committee got into the act, too, setting up its own memorabilia store. Malia, Sasha Dolls Since the Obamas moved into the White House, Michelle Obama objected to the sale by Beanie Babies-maker Ty Inc. of dolls with the same names as her daughters. The company said the Sweet Sasha and Marvelous Malia dolls weren’t modeled after the first daughters. A search for Michelle Obama’s name on Google Inc.’s Web site brings up an online ad for J. Crew Group Inc., which got free publicity when the first lady wore a J. Crew outfit on NBC’s “Tonight Show With Jay Leno” last October. “Inauguration Style: Get Looks Like Those Worn by the First Lady” the Web ad says. Psaki wouldn’t provide details about legal options the White House counsel’s office is considering to deal with commercial use of Obama’s likeness. The White House lawyers may have to make case-by-case determinations about the best ways to protect the presidential image without tempering enthusiasm or trampling on free-speech protections, said Jonathan Band, an intellectual property lawyer in Washington. “It will be difficult,” Band said. “Because he is the president of the United States and there was this campaign and everyone’s proud, I think the First Amendment will be applied much more broadly with respect to people wanting to use an image of the president than it would be with more

Resolved Question: Two weeks ago I started receiving mail addressed to my home address but with someone else's name? Please help?

All of the mail shows my home address but the name of a person I've never heard of. Everything we have received has been packages from companies I know offer free trail offers. So far we have received several Vistaprint packages with blank business cards, A gevalia coffee maker, some columbia house video tapes and a box from "Lipozene Internet" Could this be some kind of a scam? If so whats the point of sending us free stuff? How should I go about dealing with this if we keep receiving stuff? more

Resolved Question: A question about cooking in a crock pot or deep fryer?

When I moved out on my own one of my first kitchen appliances after a toaster, microwave, and a coffee maker was a deep fryer. Though I bout it, I barely used because I don't eat many fried foods. It was probably just cheap at the time. Anyway, my girlfriend moved in with me and she is wanting to buy a crock pot for us. I told we don't need one because I have that barely used deep fryer. This may seem like a weird question. If the deep fryer is clean and free of sediment can it not be used as a crock pot? Can't she fill that with broth or water? Can't she make soup or whatever in it? Isn't a deep fryer functionally the same thing as a crock pot (and vice versa)? I don't really know.Sorry for the typos. Thanks for all you help. I want to chose a best answer but all of the answers are really good. I'm gonna have to allow this one to come to a vote. thanks. more

Resolved Question: What can I safely take from a roach-infested apartment?

Hi all, after a year and a half of mad cleaning, caulking, squishing, and poisoning, my partner and I are ready to trade in our cockroach infested apartment for a clean bug-free one. Any tips as to which furniture items to take with us? Most of it will end up in the dumpster (coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven, DVD player, table, office chair) , but we're wondering if it'll be safe to take the mattress. more

Resolved Question: My sister is a spendthrift, what should I do?

A half-sister, actually, we didn't know about each other until recently. I came to stay with her and her husband. She is irresponsible and is constantly in debt! She just buys things! She and her husband are on a budget, yet she has strawberry jam with champagne and luxury coffee for breakfast. She has a spending problem. I went grocery shopping with her, to be useful and give her budget tips, and she didn't even listen. She bought three boxes of jasmine tea which she can't stand because they were giving a free tea infuser if you buy three; two glossy magazines which could be had in a library for free; a bag of packed apples when she could buy them loose and save twenty pence; orange juice in a pack - you can get the same benefit from a glass of tap water and a bottle of vitamin C; and two expensive waffle-makers! She is unemployed. I tried to stop her, and to help her. I even talked to her husband Luke - he agreed that it was not easy to live with her. What should I do? more

Okay who's up for the challenge? ONE-POINT DARES: (1) · Ignore the first five people who say 'good morning' to you. · To signal the end of a conversation, clamp your hands over your ears and grimace. · Leave your fly open for one hour. If anyone points it out, say, "Sorry, I really prefer it this way". · Walk sideways to the photocopier. · While going in an elevator, gasp dramatically each time the doors open. · When in elevator with one other person, tap them on the shoulder and pretend it wasn't you. · Finish all your sentences with "In accordance with the prophecy..." · Don't use any punctuation. · Use your highlighter pen on the computer screen. THREE-POINT DARES: (3) · Say to your boss, "I like your style", wink, and shoot him with double-barrelled fingers while making a clicking sound with your tongue that resembles the sound of a revolver. · Kneel in front of the water cooler and drink directly from the nozzle. · Shout random numbers while someone is counting. · Every time you get an email, shout ''e-mail''. · Put decaf in the coffee maker for 3 weeks. Once everyone is over his or her caffeine addictions, switch to espresso. · Introduce yourself to a new colleague as "the office bicycle". Then wink and pout. · Call I.T. help desk and tell them that you can't seem to access any pornography web-sites. FIVE-POINT DARES : (5) · At the end of a meeting, suggest that, for once, it would be nice to conclude with the singing of the national anthem (extra points if you actually launch into it yourself). · Walk into a very busy person's office and while they watch you with growing irritation, turn the light switch on/off 10times. · For an hour, refer to everyone you speak to as "Bob". · Announce to everyone in a meeting that you "really have to go do a number two". · In a meeting or crowded situation, slap your forehead repeatedly and mutter, "Shut up, damn it, all of you just shut up!" · During the course of a meeting, slowly edge your chair towards the door. · As often as possible, skip rather than walk. · Ask people what sex they are. Laugh hysterically after they answer. · Hump the photocopier. When someone spots you, stop and cough embarrassingly, then lean in to the machine and whisper loudly, "I'll call you tonight". more

Resolved Question: What makes icelandic coffee so darn good?

I've been to Iceland last summer and was amazed by how darn good they make their coffee. It's aromatic, strong and very dark and you can get it for free (!!!) at a lot of gas stations. Since my return I've been trying to brew coffee that would be as good as Icelandic coffee but I've failed (so far). So, does anyone know how Icelanders make their coffee? What beans do they use? Do they use normal drip coffee makers or something else? more

Resolved Question: caffine free cappucino or Moca?

Hi.. Weather has turned wicked cold, and I been in the mood for some nice hot coffee drink... I love cappucinos (but don't have a cappucino maker..) I LOVE a good mocha too.. Any suggestions for a brand of instant mix that I'd like? (maybe something hazelnutty or french vanilla or mocha) I have to buy decaf because (A) I try to not drink caffeine because i believe it is bad for you and (B) I have insomnia problems, so that's another reason I have to stay away from caffine.. Anyway.. any suggestions??LOL.. of course I know "Decaf" isn't COMPLETELY Decaff.. I didn't say I had a MORAL problem with caffine.. I have a HEALTH objection to caffine.. Obviously I would feel that the tiny traces found in Decaf are alot less harmful than regular coffee.. and less likely to cause insomnia... more

Resolved Question: what do you think of this destruction of 1,500,000 balots from the 2004 presidential election in Ohio--?

here is a copy of the article (source at the bottom) The Free Press: Speaking Truth to Power Tue Oct 09 2007 Departments Election Issues The dog ate my homework by Richard Hayes Phillips and Patricia "Paddy" Shaffer August 3, 2007 The following table is a compilation of excuses for the destruction of some or all of the records from the 2004 presidential election in Ohio. The statements are excerpted from the "letters of explanation" submitted in April 2007, by certain Boards of Election to the office of Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, which were provided to us in response to a public records request. According to the Columbus Dispatch ("56 Ohio counties failed to keep ballots," August 2, 2007), Brunner stated that there is no evidence that ballots were intentionally destroyed. We respectfully refer her to the "letters of explanation" from Fayette and Warren counties, both of which state, in these exact words, that some or all ballots were "intentionally destroyed." We also refer her to the "letters of explanation" from Allen, Champaign, Fairfield, Hancock, Hardin, Holmes, Logan, Marion, Medina, Monroe, Montgomery, Morrow, Paulding, Perry, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Shelby, and Stark counties, all of which state, in other words, that some or all ballots were intentionally destroyed. Adams "does not have in its possession" Allen "water damage and subsequently destroyed" Ashland "mistakenly destroyed" Ashtabula (BOE) "inadvertently disposed of" (Prosecuting Attorney) "inadvertently discarded and destroyed" Athens "inadvertently discarded" Auglaize Belmont Brown "accidentally destroyed or have been misplaced" Butler "unintentionally discarded into a Rumpke dumpster" Carroll Champaign "these items have always been destroyed" Clark "those ballots were shredded" Clermont "unable to locate" "No one remembers specifically discarding the ballots." "There is a possibility that the ballots will surface" Clinton "not found" Columbiana Coshocton Crawford Cuyahoga Darke Defiance Delaware Erie "does not have" "unaware we needed to keep" Fairfield "They would have been shredded, as we have a contract with Shred-It for disposal of all election materials." Fayette "intentionally destroyed" Franklin Fulton Gallia Geauga Greene Guernsey - "destroyed in error, due to the county maintenance worker, when collecting trash" Hamilton - "inadvertently shredded" Hancock "did not have to be retained and these items were destroyed" Hardin "destroyed prior to the court order" Harrison Henry Highland Hocking Holmes "a shelving unit collapsed onto a side table holding a working coffee maker. Many of the stored items had to be destroyed due to broken glass and hot coffee" Huron Jackson "may have been destroyed pursuant to retention schedule" "Another possibility is that (the ballots were) accidentally destroyed" Jefferson Knox Lake Lawrence Licking Logan "we were instructed by the previous Director to destroy" Lorain Lucas Madison Mahoning "accidentally disposed of (by) the Mahoning County Green Team" Marion "destroyed pursuant to the retention schedule" Medina "destroyed following the record retention schedule" Meigs Mercer "were not found" "we will continue to search" Miami Monroe "according to our retention schedule we were allowed to dispose of" Montgomery "We did not receive formal notice from the courts prior to preparing the certificate of destruction." "In addition, we contacted our county prosecutor for further authorization." Morgan Morrow "it does not say to in the retention schedule." Muskingum Noble Ottawa Paulding "destroyed after the official and the recounts were certified" Perry "destroyed shortly after the election" Pickaway Pike Portage Preble First: "unable to find" "thought it likely they had been inadvertently discarded" Second: "Ballots are buried in County landfill and are not capable of being replicated." Putnam "destroyed for security purposes" Richland "destroyed or lost by the movers or by our staff" Ross "unable to duplicate these ballots" Sandusky "Our ballots were stacked all over our office and we had them picked up at the first opportunity." Scioto (some) "unable to locate" "unknown whether the ballots were accidentally destroyed or have been otherwise misplaced." (some) "released and shredded" Seneca "The ballots were disposed of during the first week of September" Shelby "destroyed pursuant to the retention schedule, do not remember the date they were shredded" Stark "destroyed prior to notification of Judge Marbleys order" Summit Trumbull Tuscarawas Union Van Wert "unable to find" "We assume that these ballots were discarded." Vinton Warren "The ballots were intentionally destroyed." Washington Wayne Williams Wood Wyandothttp://www.freepress.org/departments/display/19/2007/2731oops that first line should read ballotsEDIT--they were require by court order to keep them due to the 57,000 voting irregularities many in Ohio and some people have already been jailed for election fraud in Ohio. The new secretary of state and attorney general (democrats) campaigned and stated at voting rights conferences that all would be investigated and people jailed if fraud discovered and now they are trying to get out of their promises. Activists in Ohio worked tirelessly discovering problems via public records requests etc. Blackwell broke several Ohio election laws during the recount and was never charged with a crime. more

Resolved Question: entertain yourself..?

Here's how to keep a healthy level of insanity and drive other people insane... At lunch time, sit in your parked car and point a hair dryer at passing cars to see if they slow down. Page yourself over the intercom. (Don't disguise your voice) Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits Always wear them one day after your boss does. (This is especially effective if your boss is the opposite gender.) Send e-mail to the rest of the company to tell them what you're doing. For example, If anyone needs me, I'll be in the bathroom. Put mosquito netting around your cubicle. Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that. Encourage your colleagues to join you in a little synchronized chair dancing. Put your garbage can on your desk and label it 'IN'. Develop an unnatural fear of staplers. Send e-mail messages that advertise free pizza, doughnuts, etc., in the breakroom. When people complain that there was nothing there, lean back, rub your stomach, and say, 'You've got to be faster than that.' Put decaf in the coffee maker for 3 weeks. Once everyone has gotten over their caffeine addictions, switch to espresso. In the memo field of all your checks, write 'For sexual favors.' Reply to everything someone says with, That's what you think.' Finish all your sentences with, 'in accordance with the prophecy.' Adjust the tint on your monitor so that the brightness lights up the entire working area. Insist to others that you like it that way. Don't use any punctuation. As often as possible, skip rather than walk. Ask people what sex they are. Specify that your drive-through order is 'to go'. Sing along at the opera. Go to a poetry recital and ask why the poems don't rhyme. more

Resolved Question: 15 ways to be insane ?

How to Maintain a Healthy Level of Insanity in the Workplace 1) Page yourself over the intercom. Don't disguise your voice. 2) Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits. Wear them one day after you boss does. This is especially effective if your boss is a different gender. 3) Make up nicknames for all your coworkers and refer to them only by these names. "That's a good point, Sparky." "No, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with you there, Cha-cha." 4) Send e-mail to the rest of the company telling them exactly what you're doing. For example: "If anyone needs me, I'll be in the bathroom." 5) Hi-Lite your shoes. Tell people you haven't lost them as much since you did this. 6) While sitting at your desk, soak your fingers in Palmolive liquid. Call everyone Madge. 7) Hang mosquito netting around your cubicle. When you emerge to get coffee or a printout or whatever, slap yourself randomly the whole way. 8) Put a chair facing a printer. Sit there all day and tell people you're waiting for your document. 9) Every time someone asks you to do something, anything, ask them if they want fries with that. 10) Send e-mail back and forth to yourself engaging yourself in an intellectual debate. Forward the mail to a co-worker and ask her to settle the disagreement. 11) Encourage your colleagues to join you in a little synchronized chair-dancing. 12) Put your trash can on your desk. Label it "IN." 13) Feign an unnatural and hysterical fear of staplers. 14) Send e-mail messages saying there's free pizza or donuts or cake in the lunch room. Resolved Question: Yard Sale Rudeness?

Okay, is it just me, or do some people who go to yard sales really need a lesson in manners? We had a multi-family yard sale this weekend, and there were so many rude people, more than I have encountered before. Some examples: 1. This man walked the whole way through, looked at everyone's items for sale, and then said very loudly, "There's nothing here but JUNK!" 2. My sister-in-law had a sofa for $10. A lady walked by, looked at it, and said, "$10 for that? I wouldn't take that crap if you gave it to me for free." 3. Another lady stopped at my table with her husband, who was looking at a coffee maker I had for sale. He wanted to buy it to replace the carafe they had broken. I had $5 on it, and was ready to lower it to $3 if they just wanted it for the carafe. His wife got really snippy and said, "Why should I pay $5 for that when I can get a brand new one for not much more?" I didn't bother offering the lower price. Anyone else have rude people at their yard sales? more
