Resolved Question: Back problems from mattress?
I had a futon mattress that had a big dent in it and I was having a sore back whenever I woke up. But I got a new mattress, a firm one with a box-spring and I'm still having a sore back....I've had it for 3 nights now and I was wondering does it take time or something? By the way I'm only 17 years old. Thanks. moreResolved Question: Any ideas on how to keep my futon mattress from folding?
I have a futon and the mattress keeps on folding. At the part of the mattress that is sitting up the corners keep on folding down revealing the frame. I was thinking Velcro could help, but maybe someone with a similar problem has a better solution? Just to clarify, it isn't slipping off the frame, the mattress is folding over. Thank you :) moreResolved Question: How do you STOP a cat from peeing on a futon?
I have had absolutely NO problems with my cat since we got him as a kitty 2 1/2 years ago. He always used the litter box and we clean that about every to every other day. He is neutered and never sprayed in his entire life. We recently got two Golden Retriever puppies a month ago and he is adjusting quite well to the change. Once, we brought the puppies down to the basement and shut the door to the cat's litter so they wouldn't go in there and eat the poo.... of course my husband then FORGOT to re-open the door and we found that the cat had peed and pooped on the new futon. Yes, it was completely our fault and we felt really bad about it. However, now he won't stop urinating on the futon. We have cleaned the futon MANY times and even sprayed the mattress itself with a non-ammonia cleaner. Fortunately, he still uses his litter box to go the bathroom but he seems to feel the need to mark his territory by peeing (and yes peeing not spraying) on the futon every time we clean it. Is there any way to break a cat of this habit without buying a new futon?? I appreciate any help I can get! Thanks moreResolved Question: what size futon mattress do I need?
I just got a futon frame from a friend but they have no clue what size it is. When I measured the frame I got 58 inches wide and 78 inches long. Anybody know what size mattress I need? Or how to measure the frame to make sure I have the right measurements? moreResolved Question: I love my futon but my back is sore from the mattress - what to do?
It came with one of those cotton batting mattresses made in china - the kind that turns to rock when you lie on it. I don't know if a foam mattress will fold properly when the futon is in 'sofa' mode. Also I don't want to spend alot of money - the futon and mattress together were a bargain ( got it used for sixty dollars). Anyone out there have an idea to make the futon a more comfortable place to sleep? Thanks! moreResolved Question: Wal-Mart Futon Question?

Ok so I bought a futon like a year and a half ago to use at my primary bed. Well from the start it wasn't incredibly comfortable, but now it's flattened out and it's almost like I'm just sleeping on the bars. I can't afford a better mattress or another bed, So I'm thinking of buying a Memory Foam Mattress pad like this http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Memory-Foam-1-inch-Mattress-Topper/834925/product.html Would that help? I am setting up a guest room, but since it's also doubling as a playroom, I need to get something fold-able that would also serve as something to sit on. The main issue I'm having is that my traditional Asian parents like to sleep on a hard surface. I was thinking of getting a futon (frame and mattress) as well as tatami mats. When my parents visit, I'd pull off the mattress and put the tatami mats on the frame. Then for any other guests, we can use the mattress. Putting the tatami mats on the frame also prevents my elderly parents from having to get up and down from the floor. Ideally I want something like this but fold-able: http://www.orientalfurniture.com/oriental-furniture/TATAMI-BED-WAL.html In that picture, it looks like the tatami mats just rest on top of a frame that has wood slats for support - which basically is what a futon frame is. I'm just worried about whether it would be stable or if there is something about tatami mats that you shouldn't put it on a futon frame. moreResolved Question: I spilled milk on my futon couch mattress and it dried.Any advice on what I can do aside from buying a new one?

i just recently got a new, metal futon. it has a huge mattress. I cant seem to figure out how on earth to raise it from the bed to sofa..it takes 2 people..and that can't be right. i want to be able to do this quickly, not take forever. if this helps: the way u get it down is pull the bottom frame up and it slowly falls down. to get it up with two people, we have been going one behind the bed and one in front and pushing it up, then pushing the mattress in. but I need to know how to get it up solo! ha ha. Thanks for answers! moreVoting Question: Have any other online shopping websites?
My parents are having an addition to their house. They're moving from their current bedroom to the addition. I'm moving from my current room to they're current room, and my current room is becoming the guest room/office. We need a bed in there, but we don't want a huge one so there is still room for office stuff. Mom and I have been online shopping for something to fit. Our budget is $150. I'm trying to tell her that's only enough for a futon mattress. I've searched overstock.com, ikea.com, hsn.com, qvc.com, ebay, many sites. I need help either finding a bed or a new site. Thank you!!!! moreResolved Question: Bed Bugs - Legal Action against Roommate?
Okay I will try to summarize as best I can. I live on the first floor of a three family house. The landlord and his family (6 people total) live upstairs, they occupy the second and third floor. My floor has two bedrooms that a close friend of mine and I shared until March of 2009. I finally had another roommate move in at the end of May. By the end of June I started seeing bug bites on my ankles and legs. I didn't think too much of it at first, It would only be two or three of them, and not every night. It was summer, there are mosquitoes and the house I live in is older, strange bugs make appearances from time to time. By the end of July however I noticed more of them, and on the day I woke up w/more than a dozen bites I started researching. Bed Bugs came up in most searches, along w/fleas and chiggers. The other two are easily eliminated so I focused on the bed bugs. I couldn't however find any sign of them in my room the way that any of the sites I went to said to check for them. After a week of this I figured I must be overreacting. I went away for the second week of August and the bites pretty much stopped though, so my suspicions arose again, and by the end of that next week after vacation I finally spotted one next to my pillow in the early morning hours. I freaked of course. I notified my landlord that day who had his wife contact an exterminator immediately. They were unable to come out for a full week but I was just glad something was in the works. When I spoke to my roommate however that night, to ask him if he'd gotten any bug bites lately, his reply was 'oh yeah, I'd been meaning to ask you about that,' and went on to say he thought it might be something from my birds. (I have 4 conures, I'm meticulous w/their cages and sweeping/vacuuming of the area they're in. My oldest one is almost 14 years old and I've had them long enough to feel confident I'd recognize something this major w/them.) Needless to say I was a bit insulted but I didn't want to start anything, I just wanted the problem taken care of. I assured him it did not come from the birds, and that it was in fact bed bugs. We both started trying to think of where they would have come in. Neither of us have had any visitors from out of town over w/the exception of my mother, who doesn't have bed bugs and thankfully still doesn't even after her stay. I went away once but the friends I shared the hotel room with didn't have them, nor did the hotel as far as I know, since our bags were all in the same place during our stay how could I be the only one to bring them back? My roommate had gone away for a weekend but also to a friend's house, who doesn't have bed bugs. It wasn't until later in the week I realized the bites had started appearing very shortly after my roommate first moved in. He of course said no he didn't bring them or his last roommates would have called him or something. But he used to talk of how dirty they were and had people over all the time from different areas, some of them shady. I know bed bugs aren't only around dirty people, it can happen in the cleanest environment, but the way he spoke of them I could believe they'd be of the mindset that they wouldn't mind living with it. When the exterminators finally came however they confirmed that the infestation was mainly in his bedroom, the closet in particular was inundated w/them, and my bedroom was only the beginnings of an infestation, the spillover I suppose, since his had grown so large. Even as they stood there in front of my landlord, my roommate and myself and told us this news, he still denied it and blamed it on his brand new futon that came sealed and boxed from Ikea. Now okay sure I know there are stories of people getting them in store bought mattresses that aren't as new as advertised...but really? I just find it hard to believe in this case. I also still wonder how come he never once asked me about the bites. He HAD to have been getting them long long before I did, and only said he had them when I brought it up to him. If he truly believed they were from me and not him why would he not come say something immediately? Now for as far as the process getting ready for the spraying, I had double bagged up all my clothes, emptied my drawers, pulled all sheets, blankets, pillow cases, etc... off the bed, pulled the curtains down ...all of this in double bags. Vacuumed several times - the whole house (w/the exception of his room, thru all of this that's all I've ever asked him to take care of) Everything was washed and dried on the highest heat settings. My roommate did none of this, he carried his clothes out in open bins and walked it to the laundromat around the corner. Every three days since the first spraying - which was on September 2nd - I've vacuumed the entire house, pulling furniture away from walls and going under and around everything, into couch cushions, using the extension for base boardsBugs are still not gone, the exterminators are saying it has to be on our end, either we're bringing them in still or doing our own home remedy, which would void the warranty, coincidentally, and how do you prove you didn't? Also my roommate has just told me his retail job of 1 and a half months is transferring him...so he's gone by December 1st. We split the cost of the treatments so far, $500 each...but if it ends up we need a different exterminator I will be stuck paying more...is there any way I can legally have him held responsible for this w/the exterminators being able to confirm the major infestation was in his room and the first time the bites started appearing coinciding w/his moving in? moreResolved Question: how should i get rid of this huge gross futon mattress?
It wont even fit in my car and its all wet from the rain, can i leave it on the street? what should i do with it? moreResolved Question: If you were me, would you be angry in this situation? Do I have a right to be PISSED!?
I'm FIRE angry! Earlier, I went to do my normal monthly grocery shopping. Unexpectedly, this religious hypocrite stalker neighbor of mine was moving out. I'm thinking, "YES! I'm THANKFUL she's leaving." She harassed & stalked me the entire 2 yrs. I've lived here. So, she was putting her furniture on the curb & advertised it for free for anyone to get. She knows & is aware of my OCD, anxiety, depression, & Tourette's disorders but doesn't care. She offered me her furniture since she knows all I have is a flat mattress from 2 yrs. ago from my futon that broke because of me being overweight (I lost a lot of weight since 2007). I accepted her free furniture offer out of fear of her embarrassing me in front of her friends about my mental disability, in which she ended up doing anyway. She asked me to help. So, I caught on to the fact that she made an *** out of me by giving me something "free" just for an excuse to enslave & embarrass me in front of her friends. Before I knew it, she was asking me to help her move this & move that. Take out the trash. When she said that, I was like, "No. My OCD." Then, she went off on me, saying I was using my disorder as an excuse. & she threw in my face about the furniture she gave me, while wearing the EXPENSIVE Nike shoes I gave her PLUS lots of music CD's, we both cooked for each other throughout the 2 yrs., & we had our ups & downs. I tried to have patience & take her s hit! & be nice. She used my disability against me & also the fact that I don't believe in Christianity. But she KEPT trying to stay on my @$$ all the time. She treats me like a child that's WAY below her, & we're not even 2 full yrs. apart. She was angry & used me to take her anger out on me. She broke her lease, which the landlord doesn't allow, & got mad because the woman who was supposed to take over didn't show up. Why me? She COMPLETELY humiliated me, & she kept telling me things to provoke me to outburst even more, & I wanted to leave, & she tried to say, "Little girls leave. Women stay." I felt obligated to stay there & help, while being treated like horse manure. So, she said my cursing was disturbing & that I was using my disorder as an excuse. @ 1st, her friends were understanding of my explanation of my disorders. & I had 2 strokes @ age 5. So, me & her got into a heated argument, & her friend switched gears on me & started taking her side & saying to me, "Yeah, she knows because she studied this. You are using your Tourette's as an excuse." So, I told her, "Don't listen to her. I have to suffer through this every day & live with this condition." She continued to agree with the neighbor & tried to play a psych game on me by saying, "You're invading my space & putting me in defense mode." I'm like, "Now, it's REALLY time to go! & I just have to be a little girl." & the religious stalker neighbor was like, "Yeah, I did this study on this guy, & he was jerking & cursing"... & whatever, whatever. & she said, "He cannot help it. You can help it. I've seen you for 2 yrs. Yes you can control it. You're using it as an excuse." I grew angrier & angrier. Now, HER furniture is in my apt., & I can't get it out. I don't want her s hit! I don't want to be reminded of her nor her friends! We have efficiency apts. So, her friend who said I put her in defense mode, was an idiot because the apartment is ALREADY enclosed! Duh! The apt. is structured where you have to take the hinges off the door to even put your BIKE in there! So tiny. I see a neurologist for my TS, & the stalker neighbor thinks GOD will take away my disability. I don't believe in him. I believe in a higher power by another name. I told my friends about it, & they're pissed & want to hurt those girls. I'm 26, my friends are 30, & the neighbor & her friends are like my age & 28. 1 of my friends said that if the neighbor was a TRUE believer of God, then she'd have patience with my disability & not treat me like she does. This isn't the entire story, but I can't think straight right now, & space is limited. moreVoting Question: I want a futon cover that affixes to the frame at the top to prevent it from slipping.?
I have a queen sized futon frame and a very thick futon mattress, which every couple of days slips down the wooden frame. I've tried all kinds of non-slip pads that go between the futon frame and the futon itself and none of them seem to work. I am looking for a futon cover with cloth loops that actually AFFIX to the frame, which is made of wooden slats with gaps between them, so the loops could go over the top. I've been sleeping on the same crappy futon for over a decade now, and I am SO READY to buy a new bed. The mattress on this one, regardless of how many flips and turns I give it, feels as though I'm sleeping on a sack of cornmeal. Worse yet, it's developed a taco-like curvature, such that my fiancee and I find ourselves rolling together throughout the night, which - as romantic as it sounds - makes it impossible to spread out in the slightest. So I'm looking. And just like everything else in this world, it's more complicated than it ought to be. I just. Want. A. Bed. But all I can find are expensive headboards (e.g., no bed attached) or frames (e.g., no headboards) or sheet sets (e.g., no actual bed). I'm also not certain what a "platform" is, although they're selling a bunch of those, as well. Is it the same as a "box-spring?" Isn't there anywhere I can go and just buy a damned bed? You know: the whole thing. Legs. Frame. Headboard. Footboard. And if it's even possible or not too much to ask, a "box spring" or "platform" and a mattress? I suppose I wouldn't be too averse to buying the mattress separate from the bed if it must be so. But really. Why is this such a pain? Help me! I want a good night's sleep!! Thanks, Kal =) moreVoting Question: help with decorating my room.?
okay so ignore my past questions that say i'm an interior designer or whatever, i'm not, it was my sister on my account (: anyway, everyone in my house is currently switching bedrooms, so i am painting mine white because i leave for college in less than a year & my mom wanted it a plain color so she can do whatever with it after i leave. so i'm trying to spice it up with as much decor as i can. things i need/want: -beaded curtains -string lights -futon cover -floor lamp the color theme of my room is lime green, turquoise & purple. i'm not anal about things HAVING to match, but i don't want like obnoxiously bright pink & yellow things just randomly sticking around. 10 points to the person who can find me the cheapest/most affordable things on my list (: here is a picture of my bedspread: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10877960 this is my loft bed that i have (not exactly the same, but you get the idea): http://www.furniturehomedesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/storage-loft-bed.jpg ^the only difference with my bed from that one is that it is higher off the ground & it is open underneath the bed & on one side of the mattress! moreResolved Question: Can i turn my futon into a real bed?

Our futon mattress has a cover which we would like to machine wash. It has a zip, we unzipped it from the inside filling (a type of fibre, messy insulation) but found that where there are hard buttons on the cover, it is attached to the insulation. Removing the buttons seems the only way, but it is nigh on impossible to get the buttons back on afterwards, as they are attached to string which seems to sink deep into the insulation on removal. Is there an easier way? moreResolved Question: Help me find this futon!?
I am thinking of buying a bunk bed from Amazon.com that has a desk and futon built in. But the futon is more like a chair that a couch. My friend let me have his futon couch that his brother left behind when he moved into a new house. When I was analyzing it at his house there seemed to be nothing wrong with it until I finally got it to my house. The whole thing smelled like dog and other nasty things. Obviously when I removed the cover there were 3 dog piss stains (his dog has anxiety issues and pees when you approach her). I would like to clean the mattress of its dog piss stains but more importantly remove the stench. I am planning to grab a scrubber and mix water & bleach to take the piss stains out. My husband and I live in an apartment directly above a smoker, in a building without much between units, so for the most part, everything we own now smells like smoke. We are going to be moving to a much nicer apartment in just a few weeks, and I would really like to get all the smoke smells out of all our furniture so that it doesn't stink up our shiny new apartment. What is the best way to get all the smell out of our mattress, futon, chairs, and other things? I've heard that the best thing to do is let them sit outside in some fresh air, but we won't have a place to do that. Any other ideas? My boyfriend and I have been doing a lot of traveling, and we think we brought home bedbugs from one of our trips. Where we live, we know it is common to have bedbugs, but we need some help to stop them! We have done A LOT of research, and have been living with the bedbug problem for nearly 2 weeks! I have been getting eaten alive, and my boyfriend suffers minorly (we know that males tend to not show a reaction quite as bad as females do). This is a serious problem! We have invested in a "dust mite" mattress cover, and have purchased covers for the pillows. We will be getting one for the futon soon. We had the exterminator in the house the other day, and he lazily sprayed around and checked the bed area(s) and said that it was unlikely for them to travel through the carpets. We know they are laying eggs, at least one batch has probably already hatched. We have sprayed the rooms with "Pronto: bedbug and dust mite" spray several times... no luck. What should we do! If we move, we will take the bugs to the new place! should we bag up all the clothing, and wash them? Vacuum the house? I am desperate! We have been losing sleep to this infestation! moreResolved Question: is there a web site for this?
i know, i'm cheap. i was wondering if there was a website where i could find mattresses and/or beds with minor defects that would be less expensive than buying one from the store. i don't know about the rest of you, but i don't see the point of spending $2000 on a bed when i live in a trailer house that didn't even cost that much lol. i'm just tired of sleeping on a futon... any suggestions? moreResolved Question: Urine soaked futon mattress!! OMG! Help!?
My sister had tripletts, they are around 11 months of age now. She came for a visit and I got out our new "company" futon for sleeping. We pushed it against walls and added rails to keep the sweeties safe. This futon was purchased new about 3 months ago - warranty just expired. Blah! I think in all the rush and excitement to get unpacked and visit, our elderly aunt put the girls to bed in just PJs with no diapers. We just assumed they would be ok with her as she is very intelligent and independent. Guess senior moments can hit even the best of intentions! :-) The next day when the babies got up it was pretty late, nearly 9 a.m. as they were tired from the long traveling day before. They had totally soaked the mattress. The pediatrician says it is not uncommon for little ones around that age to urinate 4 or 5+ times a night. They still have a diet full of liquids at that age. We scrubbed the spot with towels and followed with Folex, but it had soaked nearly all the way through. You may know that futon mattresses are very thick - the good ones about 6" thick - but are stuffed with cotton. And cotton is very absorbant. There is a big brownish ring (the mattress is a dark green) where the urine has dried so far that won't budge even with gentle shampoo and lots of rinsing. The mattress smells to high heaven. Is there any way to clean it thoroughly and is there something akin to Scotchguard that can be sprayed on it (assuming we can really get it cleaned) to prevent it from being so bad in the future? IF the little ones sleep on it with no undies again? :-) I laugh because the babies are precious. But I cry because we had to save up for a while for that particular futon. We wanted something nice and comfy for guests. I'll best some of you can give me the answers I am looking for to 1) How to deep clean the mattress. Esp. with home products. And 2) How to protect the mattress for future baby dates. Thanks so much!I think the question was not read all the way through. There was no question about potty training babies. And our elderly great aunt did the honors of changing the girls for bed. (Please read that part again as it explains that). It was an impromptu visit and we are miles away from any large stores. We used an old quillt, assuming it would be enough with the addition of diapers and jammies. Of course, we had diapers on hand. Please thoroughly read the question before you give an unnecessary and not thought out at all response. That comment goes directly to Drip. But can be a plea to all as well. Where ever I go, I am constantly seeing answers to other people by persons who obviously not read the question. Ridiculous. Please do not bother to comment if you are not going to read the question. It is a waste of everyone's time. Thank you! moreResolved Question: Warning signs he is cheating?
We've been living together a year. Suddenly he has picked up shifts at work and at another job (which I haven't seen a paycheck from) and now he's working 7 days a week. Never home. Suddenly no sex. Suddenly taken an interest in bicycling to and from work when I used to take him in his car and then use his car for that day if I didn't have work that day. Started drinking every single night to the point of black-out as soon as he gets home and half way there before he comes home. Says he drank a little at work. When I try to be affectionate he seems annoyed. Makes so many excuses for his strange behavior that don't make any sense. Last night he drug the futon mattress to the basement and slept there after I fell asleep in bed. It was our anniversary last night too. And he gave me some stupid promotional object that he got for free. You would think it would mean more to him that it was our anniversary. What would you think/do? I mean, I think even a stranger deserves to be treated better than that. moreResolved Question: Need a low and reclining bed, do they exist?
Hi, I recently chucked out my old futon (which was great) and bought a new, bigger one from a different company. Already the wood has warped, the mattress is misshapen and I'm back at the chiropractors every week. In my room I have a sloped wall, so a standard bed height will not fit. Are there any other types of bed that are quite low to the ground, and have a recline function? Any websites you can show me? Thanks! moreResolved Question: Replacing a futon frame but keeping the old futon mattress, what size frame do I need?
Hey guys, We had the Martha Stewart futon set and the frame went out on us. We don't want the same futon frame. We want to purchase a new one. The only info I can get from the website (including the mattress) is 83" W, 36"Dx 34"H and 54"D in sleeping position. There is no seperate info for the mattress, so I'm not sure if we should go with a "full" frame. Thanks in advance! :) moreResolved Question: Where to find futon overlay in Kuala Lumpur city center area?
Hi I'm looking for a good quality futon overlay, latex/microfiber, the topping bit to make my hard spring mattress a little more cushy so it won't wreck my sore back. But I just moved back to KL from overseas so I don't know where to find them in the city center area. Appreciate your help! moreResolved Question: Uneven Box Set causing achy back?
Currently, we have an Ethan Allen Bed frame (king-size), box set from Select Comfort (~9 inch) and a 9-10 thick (fairly new) futon mattress. The sleep number and other fancy mattresses didn't work for us. I was waking up with my severe back-aches and not getting good sleep. In past, flipping the mattress, helps even out the mattress. However, it didn't help us this time. On close inspection, I realized the box set had become lumpy and uneven. In my mind, it was the box set that was causing problems and not the mattress. What are the best solutions to fix this problem? I can think of following - 1. Replace the old box set with a new one 2. Use super pallets (as opposed to Box Set). 3. Use plywood planks between the mattress and the box set. Can somebody advice me on the long-term solution? Note, Futon Mattress works best for us and we replace it almost every year with a new one. So don't suggest changing the mattress. Thanks moreResolved Question: will a futon work for two? for only 6 months?
HI I've been looking for options to use as a bedding. I'm on a very tight budget and i was looking to but a futon in big lots for 199 plus a 20% discount the problem is that is the display futon and is been out there for 6 months the guy in best buy told me it wouldn't last for two people but when i sat down on it, it felt very solid. he told me that it wouldnt last after he found out that it was 160 and he said for me to wait till he put it on clearance so if it breaks they can give me a new one which would mean that i would pay 199 not 160 and i would have to sleep on the floor for maybe two days should i believe him or just go ahead and buy that one at 160 since its cheaper for me and my boyfriend. do keep in mind that is for daily use of six months? oh yeah and mattresses are too expensive for me....... or should i just buy a cheap one from walmart? plz help me ive heard sooo many bad reviews from people that bought futons in walmart or other places and it seems like if u dont put it together right it breaks... HELP! moreResolved Question: why does my mattress keep sliding out from the wall...?
and how can i stop it? i have two mattresses on top of a futon mattress on top of a box spring (i have no bed frame) and every morning i have to push it back towards the wall when i wake up....i normally wouldnt care but things keep falling back there, and if i have more than one person sitting on it it pulls out too! its not a small gap either, its like a 6"-12" gap, but its just the top mattress! HELP! P.S. please dont say to get a bedframe, i can't afford that right now! not even a cheep one from walmart! moreResolved Question: Bad gifts, tacky gifts... even insulting gifts?
Let me preface by saying I don't believe gifts are required under most circumstances (weddings are an exception), but beyond that, I don't really want someone to give me a gift as a sign of appreciation. If someone says Thank You, and really means it, that is better than something bought in a store. That said, I have received over the years, gifts I thought were kind of an insult, or gotten none at all. Here's an example: many years ago the sister of a Brazilian friend was going to University in Chicago. She wasn't happy there. So I offered to let her stay at my house. She and I got along great. Her mother decided she wanted to spend a couple months in the States, and would only travel with her son (who was also my friend). They wanted to find an apartment nearby. Instead, I offered to let them all stay at my place. Many days I took the train to work so that they wouldn't have to rent a car. I never asked them for any money for groceries, etc, and never made them feel like they were an imposition; quite the contrary, I liked having them there. It wasn't always easy. They were rather rich, and therefore thought everything should be handed to them. I only had two bedrooms, so for the first month I slept on a futon mattress on the living room floor, so my friend could have his own room (the other room was shared by mother and daughter). When they were packing up to leave for the airport, they called me into one of their bedrooms, saying they had a surprise for me. I was a little embarrassed, because it suddenly occurred to me they might feel indebted for all the thousands and thousands of dollars I had saved them, and how I tried to make their stay as pleasant and problem-free as possible. I really hoped they hadn't gotten me anything expensive (which was a possibility; they were somewhat rich). I needn't have worried: they didn't buy me anything at all. Their surprise was that they had "cleaned the room" (which really isn't accurate; they didn't vacuum or dust; they simply had removed their belongings and thrown out the garbage they had accumulated). As a note of interest, when the son arrived with the mother (and remember, this guy was my good friend), he brought me the ugliest t-shirt you could imagine. This wasn't a matter of taste; this was obviously something he picked out in a few seconds from some bargain bin, perhaps at the Rio de Janeiro airport. He put no effort nor thought into it at all. More recently, a friend of a friend wanted to come to Prague (where I currently reside), so my friend asked if he could spend a couple nights at my place. I wanted to make his trip memorable, so I showed him around the city and took him to dinner at an absurdly expensive hilltop restaurant (just because it has a fantastic view of Prague; I did not choose an expensive restaurant to impress him). While I didn't expect a thank you gift from him, he gave me one. He had brought with him a tin of cookies. This was like a Euroean version of Salerno butter cookies, something you would pick up in the supermarket for $3. I was a bit offended; I thought no gift was better than that. He wasn't poor; he had a very good paying job. So, am I out of line to expect better gifts? As I said, I really prefer getting nothing at all, but tacky gifts seem downright insulting. What are the worst gifts you have ever gotten? To everyone: I am absolutely AMAZED at the amount of insight you all have! Every answer gave me something new to contemplate, and trust me, I have read each response very carefully. Yes, I realize I should set boundaries. My philosophy has always been, "If you want to do it, do it with joy, but don't whine about how hard it may be." I also agree that people will lose respect for you if you do too much. That is something I have been very wary of lately. Once again, thanks to all your fantastic responses, and I apologize to GreatRightWing who didn't realize that the Czech bible was not supposed to be an insulting gift, but merely to humilliate him for his lack of interest in foreign languages (inside joke)I don't want to single one person out, but "Posh" made a couple excellent points. I believe we think very much alike. To the considerate Brazilian lady who got the flimsy kitchen towel, I know exactly what you mean. The one national characteristic of Czechs I don't like (I am half Czech, currently residing in Prague) is their idea that, if you give someone a gift, they should give you something. Or the idea that you should just get a person "something", a code word for something of low quality. For example, I was on vacation with two Czech friends on the island of Thassos, Greece. The daughter of the owners was so nice, we decided to get her something. My friends were content to get her some horrible, really cheap bracelet from the tacky tourist stands by the shoreline. I found her a much nicer bracelet, something I exect she is still wearing. The other one? Would have been trashed in a couple days. moreVoting Question: Should I be more high maintenance?
High maintenance means setting up standards and not being able to compromise your own standards for low values. Quite a few of my asian girlfriends have standards in finding bfs. Am I putting up with alot or overreacting? This is my list: 1. Must be educated past a high school diploma, or in college but not starting college at age 30-40 (he says it's priority but he's not ready so he's filing for unemployment or working across the street and not to mention he's dealing drugs) 2. Must always keep up appearance around women, girls especially on dates (no pizza stained t-shirts and sweaty attire, I get this all the time) 3. intelligent, funny, gentleman (never yell or criticize a girl no matter how much you disagree with her, he did yesterday because I was listening to Nightwish) 4. Being able to keep promises and stay true to one's word (This one has been broken a lot and I usually get yelled at because he doesn't think it's a big deal that he offered to pick me up or get me medicine, but later he said something came up and I can't) 5. Surprise her once in a while with something small or pick her up when you say you're not going to be there.) (I got lots of last minute phone calls with I'm going to be late or I can't pick you up, come over to my house... later it's lets fuck) 6. NO smoking or alcoholism out of pure habit. Social gatherings is fine, but daily is not good. (I'm at least tolerant compared to lots of people I know in this, but it's not enough to him and he thinks I'm being completely unfair that I'm judging this relationship by this) 7. Must value my opinions and feelings: says he cares but I can't expect him to change, because I'm only hurting his feelings whenever I say so. 8. Must show respect for hygiene: (his room is disgusting, got a mattress on the floor as a bed. First things I spotted yesterday coming over: underwear and pants on the floor, 3 bowls with grease from food the night before, cluttered laundry, the smell of stale smoke, greasy napkin paper near his keyboard, broken futon, and him saying fuck everytime he wants to discuss politics with me) moreResolved Question: How to stop my trained shih tzu from peeing on my sofa?
I have had my male shih tzu for 3 years with no problems. All of a sudden this past summer he started pooping and peeing on my futon when he was out of my eyesight and would then go hide in his cage. Once I caught him in the act and he ran. I corrected his behavior. It got to the point where I replaced the futon mattress because the smell wouldn't go away. Everything was okay, then he started the same habit on this futon. He won't poop or pee anywhere else in the house. A few times when I corrected/ scolded him, he tried to bite me. I have his cage fixed now, but I discoverd he was letting himself out of the cage when I was sleep or away. I corrected this behavior. He's very loved, sweet, smart, and calm. I just don't understand. He knows that this is wrong, so why does he keep doing this? He use to roam free when I wasn't home and/or sleep pretty much all of the time. Now it's at the point where I put him in the cage if I'm gone for 10 mins.I have got a new sofa and loveseat. I definitely don't want to give up on him, but I'm worried he might try this on my new furniture. I really love my dog, but I'm running out of patience. Help!Let me add a few more details. I got my dog as a puppy and I have had him for 3 years with no problem. He is trained to urinate, etc outside. He won't do it on paper/ training pads, so when the weather is bad I still take him out. He isn't neutered. Will that help? He gets plenty of attention I walk him everyday and reward him with a treat for good behavior. He's my little shadow. However when I broke up with an ex-boyfriend (who is a dog lover too ) in May I noticed a slight change. We remain friends and he came to visit me for the first time in months last week. My dog was very excited and started wimpering when he left. When friends and family come over they show him lots of love. Recently he started barking at one of my best friends but not her kids. He's extremely loving. If he's in his cage when people come over, he wimpers if h can't come out to play. I don't give in to his wimpers. He's lonely when I'm gone to work, but he has plenty of toys. moreResolved Question: Can you put a futon mattress on a real bed frame?

Should I go buy an nice full size air mattress from REI or Target ? It makes a deep body impression from the cotton shifting. I have put several quilts folded up under the mattress pad to lessened the deep hole. I also noticed the mattress pokes through and puffs in between the wooden rungs on the bottom. Has nothing to do with the weight of the person, does this for everyone moreResolved Question: Does anyone know of a way to clean my futon mattress?
