Futon Mattress Stores Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: Where can I buy a futon like this instore?

I'm looking to buy a futon more or less exactly like this one: http://www.csnfutons.com/Elite-Products-32-5820-604-EL2189.html (it's a blue, trifold, foam fold-up mattress if you can't see the link). I don't want to have to order online, I'd much rather just get in instore. I live in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles; anybody know any stores (maybe REI, furniture stores, etc.) that have or may have a futon like this? more

This is the one i am thinking of buying from my local canadian tire http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/3/HouseHome/Furniture/TablesChairs/PRDOVR~0681301P/Wooden%252BFuton.jsp?locale=en If you don't want to click the link here is the description "- This traditionally styled futon converts quickly and easily from sofa to full-sized sleeper bed - Features the beauty and durability of solid hardwood armrests - Features a 6" (15 cm) microfibre mattress in tan color with a quilted top - Some assembly required" Any help? it's only $229 on sale...and original price is $299 not including taxes. Resolved Question: What should I do about my sore tailbone?

I have been having a sore tailbone for about a month now, and I do know why. I recently got a new futon mattress which is thicker than the last one, but it feels more airy. It's hard to explain. The point is, I can feel the bars through the mattress when i do anything on it...sleep, lay down, sit, stand, etc. and I think that that is why I am having this problem. I had no injury that would lead to it so it HAS to be this damn futon/futon mattress. The frame itself is about a year old but like I have said, this mattress is about a month old, same as my tailbone problem. I know what kind of things I can do to stop it like pain relievers and soaking, but why even try that when the pain is just going to come back from sleeping on it and using it everyday. There is no other way to replace the mattress and we don't have the financial means to buy a better futon or buy a bed, so what should I do? If I keep sleeping on it, will my tailbone become severly damaged or anything like that? My dad did buy the cheapest futon frame in the whole store too, so that can also be a contributing factor. Here's a picture of the frame...Thanks :)https://www.boscovs.com/wcsstore/boscovs/images/store/product/images/51679947654029.jpgAlso, I cannot return the mattress because neighbor had given it to me. I love futons and have a small room so if I get a bed then it will leave me no free space :( I also like the avalibility of having a couch in the day, and bed at night. I just think we should have invested into a couple hundred dollar futon because that's what I've read. https://www.boscovs.com/wcsstore/boscovs/images/store/product/images/51679947654029.jpg <--- correct picture more

Resolved Question: Where to find an inexpensive pull out sleeper sofa?

I'm moving into a studio apartment in two months and am looking for a sleeper sofa but am having trouble finding what I'm looking for and want to see if anyone else has found something suitable that can point me to the right company/brand/store. Here is what I need: I will be sleeping on this bed exclusively for two years while I'm in Grad school so I want one that pulls out (so I can put nice sheets on it and people wont be sitting on it all the time) I do not want one that folds flat like a futon. I'm looking for a full but will settle for any size if it's in my price range. Styling is unimportant My budget is $550.00 but I would really like something under 500. Ikea has one for 499, but it doesn't look to be very high quality and I just feel like there has to be one out there somewhere a little nicer I will no under any circumstances purchase a used sleeper sofa. So no craigslist. I am a very fastidious person who is appalled by the idea of sleeping on a used mattress from someone I don't know. In my mind it isn't clean and could have bed bugs or fleas in it, so I need something new. I know a lot of you out there live in studio apartments. How did you solve this problem? What did you buy to sleep on? more

Resolved Question: do you think that if i get a spring futon mattress, it will be almost as good for your back as a normal bed?

first off, i am used to using a traditional spring bed, i am not into those fancy space age beds. the mattress i am getting is more expensive than the typical futon mattress. i used to sleep on a bed but decided to get a futon. my concern is that just because it feels comfortable when i tried it at the store , how will it be in the long run? i will get it in a couple of days and there is a 30 day return policy. i also picked the less expensive futon frame with the more expensive mattress, so i dont know if the cheap bed frame will cause discomfort. more

Resolved Question: King Sized Bunk Beds with Futon on Top?

I don't know if what I am trying to find is impossible or super expensive or what... But. I am looking for a bunk bed type frame. Where you can put a futon on the top bunk and a king sized mattress on the bottom. Is this possible? Any links, stores, numbers etc...? Please, please, please help me find this! I have a futon mattress and I just inherited a king sized mattress and I need to find a frame to accommodate both! I have scoured the internet already and will probably be doing it while you read this! Help me find it! PLEASE! more

Resolved Question: Bed Bugs - Legal Action against Roommate?

Okay I will try to summarize as best I can. I live on the first floor of a three family house. The landlord and his family (6 people total) live upstairs, they occupy the second and third floor. My floor has two bedrooms that a close friend of mine and I shared until March of 2009. I finally had another roommate move in at the end of May. By the end of June I started seeing bug bites on my ankles and legs. I didn't think too much of it at first, It would only be two or three of them, and not every night. It was summer, there are mosquitoes and the house I live in is older, strange bugs make appearances from time to time. By the end of July however I noticed more of them, and on the day I woke up w/more than a dozen bites I started researching. Bed Bugs came up in most searches, along w/fleas and chiggers. The other two are easily eliminated so I focused on the bed bugs. I couldn't however find any sign of them in my room the way that any of the sites I went to said to check for them. After a week of this I figured I must be overreacting. I went away for the second week of August and the bites pretty much stopped though, so my suspicions arose again, and by the end of that next week after vacation I finally spotted one next to my pillow in the early morning hours. I freaked of course. I notified my landlord that day who had his wife contact an exterminator immediately. They were unable to come out for a full week but I was just glad something was in the works. When I spoke to my roommate however that night, to ask him if he'd gotten any bug bites lately, his reply was 'oh yeah, I'd been meaning to ask you about that,' and went on to say he thought it might be something from my birds. (I have 4 conures, I'm meticulous w/their cages and sweeping/vacuuming of the area they're in. My oldest one is almost 14 years old and I've had them long enough to feel confident I'd recognize something this major w/them.) Needless to say I was a bit insulted but I didn't want to start anything, I just wanted the problem taken care of. I assured him it did not come from the birds, and that it was in fact bed bugs. We both started trying to think of where they would have come in. Neither of us have had any visitors from out of town over w/the exception of my mother, who doesn't have bed bugs and thankfully still doesn't even after her stay. I went away once but the friends I shared the hotel room with didn't have them, nor did the hotel as far as I know, since our bags were all in the same place during our stay how could I be the only one to bring them back? My roommate had gone away for a weekend but also to a friend's house, who doesn't have bed bugs. It wasn't until later in the week I realized the bites had started appearing very shortly after my roommate first moved in. He of course said no he didn't bring them or his last roommates would have called him or something. But he used to talk of how dirty they were and had people over all the time from different areas, some of them shady. I know bed bugs aren't only around dirty people, it can happen in the cleanest environment, but the way he spoke of them I could believe they'd be of the mindset that they wouldn't mind living with it. When the exterminators finally came however they confirmed that the infestation was mainly in his bedroom, the closet in particular was inundated w/them, and my bedroom was only the beginnings of an infestation, the spillover I suppose, since his had grown so large. Even as they stood there in front of my landlord, my roommate and myself and told us this news, he still denied it and blamed it on his brand new futon that came sealed and boxed from Ikea. Now okay sure I know there are stories of people getting them in store bought mattresses that aren't as new as advertised...but really? I just find it hard to believe in this case. I also still wonder how come he never once asked me about the bites. He HAD to have been getting them long long before I did, and only said he had them when I brought it up to him. If he truly believed they were from me and not him why would he not come say something immediately? Now for as far as the process getting ready for the spraying, I had double bagged up all my clothes, emptied my drawers, pulled all sheets, blankets, pillow cases, etc... off the bed, pulled the curtains down ...all of this in double bags. Vacuumed several times - the whole house (w/the exception of his room, thru all of this that's all I've ever asked him to take care of) Everything was washed and dried on the highest heat settings. My roommate did none of this, he carried his clothes out in open bins and walked it to the laundromat around the corner. Every three days since the first spraying - which was on September 2nd - I've vacuumed the entire house, pulling furniture away from walls and going under and around everything, into couch cushions, using the extension for base boardsBugs are still not gone, the exterminators are saying it has to be on our end, either we're bringing them in still or doing our own home remedy, which would void the warranty, coincidentally, and how do you prove you didn't? Also my roommate has just told me his retail job of 1 and a half months is transferring him...so he's gone by December 1st. We split the cost of the treatments so far, $500 each...but if it ends up we need a different exterminator I will be stuck paying more...is there any way I can legally have him held responsible for this w/the exterminators being able to confirm the major infestation was in his room and the first time the bites started appearing coinciding w/his moving in? more

Resolved Question: Mattress floor vs. boxspring vs. foundation?

I had a thick futon mattress and it was a little to soft so I got a Serta firm mattress and tossed it on top; It was great. Now I moved and had to get rid of everything so I just have the mattress. I laid it on the floor and its the very uncomfortable. But when I went back to the store for the boxspring they said it comes with a foundation that doesn't have springs just a wood frame and metal wires. I don't know if this will help me because the mattress on the floor is way to hard. Any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Where can I buy blocks of memory foam?

I am looking for a place where I can buy large pieces of thick memory foam so I can make a mattress for a futon. I don't want to buy a pre-made mattress, I just want to buy bulk blocks of memory foam. Any one know where I can find this? I have tried local craft stores like Michael's and JoAnne fabrics, with no luck. more

Resolved Question: I need ideas for a new bedroom design!?

So I'm currently in the process of redoing my entire bedroom meaning new bed and everything. I really like the concept/look of the futon/platform beds however I have no idea where to go to actually purchase one? I'm in the DC area and I'm trying to find a few upscale places that sell them so I can actually take a look at them in real life. I'm not looking at mattress discounters ew. Resolved Question: Help me find this futon!?

Resolved Question: Am i being scammed? Is he lying?

Ok- so here is the deal. I got a new mattress, well actually a futon, and it was extremely uncomfortable. there were only strips of wood holding it together, and it felt like it would break. It was creaky, and hard. I asked for a return, and the store owner said that there was a Federal Law against mattress returns, and he wouldnt give me my money back. I looked it up, and alot of mattress stores, basically EVERY mattress store, allows returns within 30-90 days of the purchase, depending on the store. Is he lying? Is there any possible way that i can get my money back? Like proof there isnt a federal law? more

Resolved Question: Please help. Suggestions about getting a new futon mattress?

My landlord is too cheap to buy a new one. ( The apt is furnished) My family stays over often and it is both where they sleep and the main couch where I sit all the time. Is Target good? I need specific stores/brands that you like if possible I don't want to spend too much, I'm no millionaire. Thanks a 'million' !The apt already has the futon, and he's not going to buy a couch. The frame is ok, it's just that the mattress is thin now from sitting lying on it so a new one would help. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Using a futon mattress on a regular bed?

I just bought a platform bed.. the guy at the store recommended I get a futon mattress for it. Tried it out at the store and it was really comfortable.. but I've heard that futon matresses don't last long. Still - it's only 130, so if it would at least last me a year.... that'd be great. What are your thoughts on using futon mattresses?? Any experience?thanks twilight - I just hate to spend the money on something that won't last long.. good to hear that they can and do sometimes last for quite awhile.Ah.. it does have slates.. :/ Maybe I'll just get the futon mattress for now, and maybe get some extra padding to put over it more

Resolved Question: Bad gifts, tacky gifts... even insulting gifts?

Let me preface by saying I don't believe gifts are required under most circumstances (weddings are an exception), but beyond that, I don't really want someone to give me a gift as a sign of appreciation. If someone says Thank You, and really means it, that is better than something bought in a store. That said, I have received over the years, gifts I thought were kind of an insult, or gotten none at all. Here's an example: many years ago the sister of a Brazilian friend was going to University in Chicago. She wasn't happy there. So I offered to let her stay at my house. She and I got along great. Her mother decided she wanted to spend a couple months in the States, and would only travel with her son (who was also my friend). They wanted to find an apartment nearby. Instead, I offered to let them all stay at my place. Many days I took the train to work so that they wouldn't have to rent a car. I never asked them for any money for groceries, etc, and never made them feel like they were an imposition; quite the contrary, I liked having them there. It wasn't always easy. They were rather rich, and therefore thought everything should be handed to them. I only had two bedrooms, so for the first month I slept on a futon mattress on the living room floor, so my friend could have his own room (the other room was shared by mother and daughter). When they were packing up to leave for the airport, they called me into one of their bedrooms, saying they had a surprise for me. I was a little embarrassed, because it suddenly occurred to me they might feel indebted for all the thousands and thousands of dollars I had saved them, and how I tried to make their stay as pleasant and problem-free as possible. I really hoped they hadn't gotten me anything expensive (which was a possibility; they were somewhat rich). I needn't have worried: they didn't buy me anything at all. Their surprise was that they had "cleaned the room" (which really isn't accurate; they didn't vacuum or dust; they simply had removed their belongings and thrown out the garbage they had accumulated). As a note of interest, when the son arrived with the mother (and remember, this guy was my good friend), he brought me the ugliest t-shirt you could imagine. This wasn't a matter of taste; this was obviously something he picked out in a few seconds from some bargain bin, perhaps at the Rio de Janeiro airport. He put no effort nor thought into it at all. More recently, a friend of a friend wanted to come to Prague (where I currently reside), so my friend asked if he could spend a couple nights at my place. I wanted to make his trip memorable, so I showed him around the city and took him to dinner at an absurdly expensive hilltop restaurant (just because it has a fantastic view of Prague; I did not choose an expensive restaurant to impress him). While I didn't expect a thank you gift from him, he gave me one. He had brought with him a tin of cookies. This was like a Euroean version of Salerno butter cookies, something you would pick up in the supermarket for $3. I was a bit offended; I thought no gift was better than that. He wasn't poor; he had a very good paying job. So, am I out of line to expect better gifts? As I said, I really prefer getting nothing at all, but tacky gifts seem downright insulting. What are the worst gifts you have ever gotten? To everyone: I am absolutely AMAZED at the amount of insight you all have! Every answer gave me something new to contemplate, and trust me, I have read each response very carefully. Yes, I realize I should set boundaries. My philosophy has always been, "If you want to do it, do it with joy, but don't whine about how hard it may be." I also agree that people will lose respect for you if you do too much. That is something I have been very wary of lately. Once again, thanks to all your fantastic responses, and I apologize to GreatRightWing who didn't realize that the Czech bible was not supposed to be an insulting gift, but merely to humilliate him for his lack of interest in foreign languages (inside joke)I don't want to single one person out, but "Posh" made a couple excellent points. I believe we think very much alike. To the considerate Brazilian lady who got the flimsy kitchen towel, I know exactly what you mean. The one national characteristic of Czechs I don't like (I am half Czech, currently residing in Prague) is their idea that, if you give someone a gift, they should give you something. Or the idea that you should just get a person "something", a code word for something of low quality. For example, I was on vacation with two Czech friends on the island of Thassos, Greece. The daughter of the owners was so nice, we decided to get her something. My friends were content to get her some horrible, really cheap bracelet from the tacky tourist stands by the shoreline. I found her a much nicer bracelet, something I exect she is still wearing. The other one? Would have been trashed in a couple days. more

Resolved Question: Easy Backflip Question! ?

Hello! I wanna learn how to do a backflip and I`ve seen a bunch of you tube videos on how to do it...so i think I won`t have too much trouble attempting it...seems easy as long as you jump up and tuck in fast enough...lol My only question is.....is it ok if I practice it on a futon? Like, safetywise? I don`t have a trampoline or a mattress-mattress... And as long as someone`s watching me, I`m not worried about hurting myself... or should I be? I read on wikihow that you have to have a lot of muscle strength and stuff to do a backflip and that you have to be able to do all this other twist and jumpy crap in order to try a backflip...my question...is that true? Cuz that seems like BS to me... IDK... Anyway, Futon Ok? BTW: Futon- (according to some website.,,) "A thin folding mattress. In many traditional Japanese homes futons are used to sleep on. In the day they are stored away in closets. As Japanese homes are small, futons are used to conserve space." Lol. Just in case someone needs to know... I live in Japan btw...  more

Voting Question: Does anyone think this sounds like pregnancy?

I was just affected by the hurricanes, so I am not able to get to a store to buy a pregnancy test. My truck got flooded, destroyed. Anyways, I don't know if the symptoms I am having could be stress from the hurricanes or pregnancy. What does everyone think? Basically, I've been very moody, having a lot of mood swings. I am tired, urinate a lot, and I'm nauseous constantly. Also, I am always hungry. I can eat, be full and then ten minutes later I need to eat again. Also, I feel full. Even though I'm hungry and I eat, I still feel like my body is full up. On top of all of that, I have been having a lot of back pain. I thought it could be because I am sleeping on a futon mattress on a floor right now, but I don't know. The pain is always in my lower back. I almost forgot. I've also been having headaches. I've always had headaches, but never like this. These are constant and not that severe. They're just there all the time. Pain relievers can't seem to get rid of them. The last symptom is kind of embarrassing. I've been having libido issues. Lately I haven't really been in the mood. I would really appreciate people's opinions. Thank you for all of the help.Thank you for your help. You guys are helping to put this into perspective. more

Resolved Question: I lost my case in magistrate court, what to do next?

I bought a futon at a discount store. Sells for $679 bought for $250. I hated it after I took it home. Wanted to return it. Called the store, they said with a receipt and before 30 days, I can get a store credit. I took it back 28 days later, the owner refused to take it back because it was concidered a "used mattress". It looks more like a couch that folds out like a platform to sleep on. He told me it was state law that he could not sell a used mattress. OK, I took him to court, just got the judgement in and I lost. I am so freakin mad cause he lied in court about his return policy and lied about telling me it was state law. He said he never told me it was against the law. In Georgia you can sell a used mattress, but you cannot represent it and sell it as new. His store is the type store that gets returns or unclaimed freight or something. It's not a big chain. I was honest about everything I said and still lost and the judge didnt say why. Resolved Question: What is the best mattress for a bad back?

I have tremendous pain in my lower back. I need to strengthen it all the time. Recently I bought a mattress instead of my futon, but it wore in really easily and I wake up almost every morning with tremendous pain in my back. I think they I would probably need a more firm mattress. It's just so hard to tell when you are in the store. Does anyone have any suggestions for makers and models? Thanks more

Resolved Question: What is the practicality of stacking thinner futons together?

I am looking to decorate a studio apartment in minimalist style, and I like the traditional style Japanese futon, having slept on a futon, on the floor, for years. However a non-stored futon takes up way too much space in the studio. I realize that there are futon "sofa beds", but that really doesn't go well with the style of decor I'd like to use here. I really rather like the idea of storing futons in closets or in storage furniture during the day. I am aware that Japanese style futons are meant to be deployed over tatami matting, and NOT hardwood flooring. My current idea is as follows: purchase 2-3 thin (3"-4") all cotton futon mattresses that might be folded in 4s, stacked, and stored (possibly under a sideboard table during the day). At night, unfold and stack the futons together, essentially making the bottom thin futon a "tatami substitute" with the upper futon(s) making a sleeping surface. Has anyone tried this, or something similar? Any ideas on how well this would work?I'm looking for comments more on the practicality of the storage strategy. The thinner mattresses should be store-able this way, and I'm thinking stacking them this way should make them sleep-able. I'm looking for opinions/experiences about whether such an idea is workable and/or comfortable.I appreciate the viewpoint. I would point out that most futons are cased in a canvas/cotton like material, and not satin. I think the frictional coefficient of a queen sized mattress would be quite high. Cushions DO tend to fly apart, but their thickness/width and mass ratios are very different from futons, and they are often cased in slippery fabrics. Traditional Japanese futons in tatami rooms are folded daily. Also, I'd note that relatively thin sofa "hide-a-bed" mattresses stay folded (and sat on!) for weeks to months at a time. I must admit they are not the most comfortable of sleeping platforms, but they are a single 3-4" thickness. As for the effort ... yes, it IS a commitment that has to be taken seriously, or not done at all. more

Resolved Question: Bed Slats, box springs, and other fun ?'s. HELP!?

Bed Slats, box springs, and other fun ?'s. HELP!? http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/fur/579281981.html So I really want to get this bed....But I was looking at it, and it seems to not have room for a box spring, just a futon mattress or regular mattress maybe... The guys says in the ad it needs the bed slats (no biggie), ikea is close, but does that mean that it is not for use with a box spring too? Could it be? The store it was purchased from seems to sell mostly these types of beds. are they not versatile? more

My five year old and two year old have a bunk bed with a full size and twin size mattress. I didn't want to drive around from store to store - I wanted to ask you guys if you know where I can get the full size set. My oldest son is almost nine, he has a full size futon.
